So we have been diagnosed with "unexplained infertility" which effects 2% of all couples. The last time we went to the clinic we were told that we were on "the wrong side of the stats" and they would test some more to see if anything was missed.
Part of our initial testing over 2 years ago was a hysteroscopy that showed through a camera (very uncomfortable and crampy) that there was nothing wrong with my uterus such as fibroids or scar tissue. My first two pregnancies from IUI, which is far less intrusive than IVF, lasted the longest at 11 and 8 weeks. We elected to do a D&C surgery both times so we can test to see if abnormal chromosomes were the reason for our losses - a common reason for miscarriage when usually the egg does not divide properly. D&C's could cause scarring but we were told the chances were low. Abnormal chromosomes were determined for our first pregnancy and the test for the second pregnancy was inconclusive.
After the third pregnancy from the IVF resulted in an early miscarriage, we did another hysteroscopy that showed a small scar in the corner of my uterus. My doctor suggested I get minor surgery which occurred last October with my ob/gyn before we tried the two rounds of frozen embryo transfers (FETs). Emotionally I didn't handle the surgery too well but got through it. But then the frozen cycles resulted in a chemical pregnancy and early miscarriage at 6 weeks as well. We were so frustrated that the IUIs gave us "better" results when statistically the IVF/FETs have a much higher success rate.
Today I went for another hysteroscopy. This time more scarring was found in an upper area so we were quite confused. Doc said when they remove some scarring it can reveal more later. She said (something to the effect of) what could be happening is the lack of blood flow to the lining is not allowing the pregnancy to sustain too long after the implantation so the latest pregnancies are ending quite early.
I was so dismayed to find out I need to go in for a fourth surgery. It may not be until at least July/August unless I can get triaged earlier. Then there is recovery time before the next IVF. This delays everything once again, including adoption. I was also pissed we didn't do another hysteroscopy or other test after the surgery to make sure it was all okay.
On the other hand, we are so resolved to try anything for what may be the last round of fertility treatments. If this explains part of the unexplained, then back to the hospital I go.....
